Use the Connections tab (Figure 1 and Figure 2) to connect to the network engine, determine which network engines are online, and log connection errors. Figure 1 shows the NCT when the NCT is started, prior to discovery of network engines and prior to connecting to a network engine.

When you start the NCT, the Connections tab appears as the default screen. Prior to connecting to a network engine, the NCT displays a red banner with Disconnected displayed on the banner. Also, only the Connections and About, Etc. tabs are available prior to connecting to an engine.

The Connections tab presents different options depending on whether you are using the NCT in Normal mode or Advanced mode. The Advanced mode includes all of those options present in Normal mode, as well as options that are only available in Advanced mode. All options are shown in Figure 2 and described in Table 1.

Figure 2 shows the NCT with network engines discovered and one of the discovered engines connected to the NCT.

Note: Shaded callouts signify those features that are only available in Advanced Mode. Features are described in the following table.
Table 1. Connections tab features and user actions

Callout Number

Item Name

User Action, Item Function, and Item Description

1

Connections Tab

Displays all connection operations available to the network engine.

Switches to the Explorer tab. See Explorer tab for more information.

4

About, Etc. Tab

Switches to the About, Etc. tab. See About, Etc. tab for more information.

5

Connect Button

Connects the NCT to the network engine entered in the Connect to: field.

6

Disconnect Button

Disconnects the NCT from the network engine to which the NCT is currently connected. Clicking Disconnect does not exit the NCT application.

7

Quit Button

Exits the NCT application.

Note: Clicking Quit immediately disconnects you from the network engine. Any unsaved data open in the Connections tab or other tabs is lost.

8

Discover Button

Locates compatible network engines within range.

Note: The NCT can discover only those network engines that are connected on the same subnet as the NCT. See Metasys software requirements for network engines connecting to the NCT for additional network engine software requirements.

9

Clear List Button

Clears all devices from the Discovered Devices list.

10

Connect UI Button

Starts the Site Management Portal for the network engine that is currently connected.

11

Remote Display Button or Remote Desktop Button

Advanced mode only.

Opens a remote display or Remote Desktop window for the network engine that is currently connected.

Note: The button displays Remote Display when the NCT is connected to an NAE35, NAE45, or NCE25. The button displays Remote Desktop when connected to an NAE55 or NIE55. The button is not present for engines that are running the Linux OS.

12

Connect Telnet Button

Advanced mode only.

Connects to the Telnet server for the network engine that is currently connected.

Note: The Connect Telnet button is available only when the NCT is connected to an NAE35, NAE45, or NCE25. The button is not present for engines that are running the Linux OS.

13

Connect FTP Button

Advanced mode only.

Starts the FTP server for the network engine that is currently connected. See Connect FTP on the Connections tab for more information.

Note: The Connect FTP option is available only when the NCT is connected to an NxE55-1, NxE55-2, NAE35, NAE45, or NCE25. The button is not present for engines that are running the Linux OS.

14

Start SSH Button

Advanced mode only.

Starts a secure connection for the network engine that is currently connected. See Start SSH on the Tools tab for more information.

Note: The Start SSH option is only available on engines with Linux and can be run only on Johnson Controls laptops.

18

Connection Activity Log

Records and displays activities performed, status messages, any connection errors you encounter, and connection remedy messages while working from any of the NCT tabs. The Connection Activity Log provides valuable diagnostic and remedy information regarding the activities performed from NCT.

19

Always On Top Check Box

Forces the NCT window to remain on top of the other open windows on your computer. Selecting the check box does not deactivate the other windows, but the NCT on top may hide important information displayed in other windows if the NCT window is not placed or sized well.
