A Machine Tag provides a user-friendly way to identify a machine in the License Portal. When the
Software Manager has a value for the Machine Tag, it displays on its main window. If
the Software Manager does not have a value for the Machine Tag because you have not
defined the Machine Tag in the License Portal, it displays as:
Undefined
.
If your machine can connect to the online connection,
you can use the Software Manager to submit a Machine Tag to the License Portal using
the Machine Tag dialog box. Otherwise, you must use the
License Portal to define the Machine Tag. When you enter a Machine Tag, try to
include useful content in the tag. For example, mention what you use the machine
for, or its location, such as ADX-1@ABC Corp HQ, 123 Main
.
When the Software Manager has an online connection to the system, it automatically gets the current machine tag value directly from the License Portal. When the Software Manager does not have an online connection to the system, it can only get the machine tag value from a license activation file during an offline activation.
A machine tag can have multiple lines. The Software Manager's main window only shows the first
line or portion of the Machine Tag if the length is too long. You can see the full
Machine Tag in its tool tip, or click on the Machine Tag to open the
Machine Tag dialog box. See Troubleshooting if the Machine
Tag value displays as: Error reading value
.
[LOCAL]
in the Machine Tag tool tip to indicate that the value
came from a copy of the Machine Tag that was stored locally on the machine.
