Plant Optimizer features two primary modes, fully automatic mode and advisory mode.

The mode indicator in the upper right of the user interface indicates whether Plant Optimizer is in full and automatic control of your system, or if Plant Optimizer renders advisory suggestions for optimization, but does not have control of your system. If Plant Optimizer is in advisory mode, the plant is controlled either automatically by the plant automation system or manually by plant operators, which means operators must adjust setpoints based on Plant Optimizer recommendations.
Note: The mode indicator color for automatic mode is green, for advisory mode is blue, and for unavailable mode is red.
Table 1. Operating modes
Mode Description
Auto CUP calculates operational optimization opportunities and sends equipment requests and setpoint commands to your plant automation system with the CUP Network Automation Engine (NAE).
Advisory Your plant automation system controls your plant as normal. CUP continues to run economic dispatch recommendations, but CUP does not communicate with or control the plant automation system or your plant.
Auto (Pending) When you request a change to Auto mode, the Mode indicator displays Auto (Pending) until the plant automation system accepts or rejects the request.
Advisory (Pending) When you request a change to Advisory mode, the Mode indicator displays Advisory (Pending) until the plant automation system accepts or rejects the request.
Unavailable Advisory CUP is offline. When CUP is offline, the platform notifies the Johnson Controls Support team automatically. If the problem persists, contact the Support team. See Contact information.
Unavailable Auto CUP is offline, and was last in Auto mode. When CUP is offline, the platform notifies the Johnson Controls Support team automatically. If the problem persists, contact the Support team. See Contact information.
