Because mechanical system design characteristics are unique, system performance can differ from what is considered typical for standard applications and process IDs. When system performance is atypical, you must determine your own custom tuning parameters. To determine your own custom tuning parameters, follow these steps:
  1. Create trends for several variables. See Adding a Trend in an Advanced Application Controller.
  2. Complete a step test. See Performing a Step Test.
  3. Monitor temperature changes and time. See Trend Studies.
  4. Determine the time constant, dead time, and process range for the variables you trended. See Process IDs.
  5. Calculate new proportional band and integral times for the PID control. For information on calculating these values, see Process IDs and contact your field support representative for assistance.
