The Boot Code is the startup code for the device. The Boot Code acts like a mini-operating system in the device and supports the communications necessary to transfer the Main Code to the device.

The Main Code acts like an onboard library and gives the device information on the modules. If the module used in the Application Code is changed, you need to update the Main Code. Together, the Boot Code and Main Code make up the firmware.
Note: Transferring Main Code into an Point Expansion Module over the SA Bus with a Bluetooth connection is 1 to 2 minutes (30%) faster than doing so over an FC Bus connection. The typical transfer to device time is three to four minutes for an SA Bus transfer and nearly five minutes for an FC Bus connection.

By default, the Radio Codetransfer option is available for Wireless Field Bus Routers and repeaters. This option speeds up the process of upgrading the code in Wireless Field Bus Routers. Refer to the Wireless Field Bus Routers product documentation for guidelines on transferring to wireless devices.

If the Radio Code and Main Code are both selected for transfer, they will be sent together. The Radio Code transfer option is required to upgrade a Wireless Field Bus Router that is used as a repeater, and when the Wireless Field Bus Router version is at a different version from the boot and Main Code versions of a controller.

The switch communication mode option switches communication protocols in an MS/TP or N2 controller compatibility with the FC bus.

The SA Bus Firmware Code option sends a file to update devices on the SA Bus of the device. With this feature, you can update multiple Point Expansion Modules at a time. The tool sends the required data to the device so that the device can update SA Bus devices defined in the Application.

The Application Code tells the device the actual code/sequence and priorities of the control strategy created in the tool (for example, definitions of the Inputs, Outputs, Control Logic, and Network variables).
